Types of The Reappearance Signs Of Imam AlMahdi (AJ)?
Investigators divide the signs of reappearance of the Imam into three parts:
These signs are classified into: signs which precede the reappearance by some period of time, signs which are close to the day of reappearance, minor signs and major sign, and signs which will definitely occur and other signs which are not definite to occur.
These classifications are not useful for us in the induction of the reality of the properties of the signs and their sequence of occurrence, so we will disregard them. But, as the social signs, the signs which are far from the day of reappearance, and the events at the end of time, will all be realized across long periods of time, having no definite historical signals, they will not be included in our research work.
But, are there really inevitable signs, and other non-inevitable signs?... And what are they?
Initially, the two following narratives describe the appointed time; any appointed time in general. A man asked Imam AlBaqir (AS) about applying that to the AlSufiani.
From Abo Ja’far Mohammad bin Ali (AS) regarding the words of Allah, High is He: "And He decreed a term, and a designated term with Him". (Alan’aam, 2). Imam AlBaqir (AS) said: “They are two terms: an inevitable term, and a suspended term". Hamran said to him: And what is a inevitable term? He said: "It is the one for which is the will of Allah". Hamran said: I hope that the term of the AlSufiani is the suspended one. Abo Ja’far (AS) said: "No, by Allah. It is an inevitable term, which is unavoidable". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam Almahdi, vol 5, p 96, h # 1517), (six sources).
From Abo Abdullah (AS), he said: "There is an inevitable event, and there is a non-inevitable event. And the emergence of the AlSufiani in the month of Rajab is inevitable". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, vol 3, p 463, h # 1024). (nine sources).
Secondly: According to the following narratives the inevitable signs are not only five, as is commonly known; they are:
From Abo Hamzah Althomaly, who said: I said to Abo Abdullah (AS): They used to say: The emergence of the AlSufiani is an inevitable event, He said to me: "Yes. And the call in the sky is inevitable; and the sun rising from its setting side is inevitable". (And some other things he said to be inevitable); the discord among the clan of the Abbasids, (their differences about the state) is inevitable, and the killing of the immaculate soul is inevitable, the reappearance of AlMahdi of Ahlulbayt (People of the Prophetic House)(AS) is inevitable". I said to him: And how will that cry be like? He said: "A caller form the sky will call at the beginning of daytime: O yes; the right is with Ali and his partisans. Then Satan, Allah curses him, will call at the end of daytime: truly, the right is with the AlSufiani and his partisans. By then the unjust people will be in doubt". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, vol 3, p 277, h # 811). (20 sources).
From more than one of his companions, from Abo Abdullah (AS), we asked him: Is the AlSufiani of the inevitable matters? He said: "Yes. And killing the immaculate soul is inevitable, AlMahdi is inevitable, the land sinking in the desert is inevitable, and a hand palm that appears in the sky is inevitable, and the call in the sky is inevitable". I said: And what will there be in the call? He said: "A caller will call by the name of AlMahdi and the name of his father (AS)". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, vol 3, p 450, h # 1003.) (three sources).
From Abo Abdullah (AS), he said: "An inevitable event, which should take place before the reappearance of AlMahdi, are the emergence of AlSufiani, the land sinking in the desert, killing the immaculate soul, and the caller from the sky". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, vol 3, p 450, h # 1005.) (three sources).
From Abo Abdullah (AS); he was asked: Would there be a signs before that matter?, He said: "Oh yes". I said: And what is it? He said: "The demise of the Abbasid, the emergence of the AlSufiani, the killing of the immaculate soul, the land sinking in the desert, and the sound from the sky". I said: My self for you be sacrificed, I am worried lest this matter be long to come. He said: "No. it is but like the order of beads, each one following the other". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, , vol 3, p 450, h # 1004). (six sources).
I heard Abo Abdullah (AS) say: "The discord among the Abbasids is inevitable, the call from the sky is inevitable, the emergence of AlMahdi is inevitable". I asked: And how would that call be? He said: "A caller will call from the sky at the beginning of day time: O yes; Ali and his partisans are the winners. And another caller will call at the end of the day: Oh, Othman and his partisans are the winners". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, . vol 3, p 458, h # 1019). (sixteen sources).
From Abo Abdullah (AS), he said: "The AlSufiani is inevitable, his emergence will be in the month of Rajab, from the beginning of his emergence till its end are fifteen months; during six months of them he will be fighting. When he takes control of the five regions he will govern for nine months, not a day longer". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, , vol 3, p 462, h # 1023). (twelve sources).
From Abo Abdullah (AS), he said: "The call is inevitable, the AlSufiani is inevitable, the AlYamani is inevitable, killing the immaculate soul is inevitable, a hand palm appearing in the sky is inevitable, and panic in the month of Ramadan, which wakes up the sleeping and alarms the waking; and drives the damsel to get out of her private room". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, vol 3, p 464, h # 1025). (two sources).
It is probable that the only following narrative, in addition to some sources, in which the expression ‘inevitable’ is mentioned, which could be additions from commentators or scribes, is the reason behind the common belief that the inevitable signs are only five. This is despite the fact that some other mentioned signs are described to be inevitable in the narratives mentioned above; despite the fact that this narrative does not confine the number of signs to only five, nor does it deny the inexistence of other inevitable signs!
From Imam AlSadiq (AS): "There will be five inevitable signs before the emergence of AlMahdi: the cry, the AlSufiani, the sinking of ground, and the killing of the immaculate soul, and the AlYamani". I said: My self for you be sacrificed, If one of your Ahlulbayt (People of the Prophetic House) emerges before these signs, shall we join him?, He said: "No". On the following day I recited this verse of the Quran: *If We will, We send down to them a sign from heaven, to which they will bend their necks in humility*. (Quran, Alshu’araa’, 4). I said to him: Is it the cry? He said; "Yes. If it really were, the necks of the enemies of Allah (E H), would be bent down in humility". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, . vol 5, p 298, h # 1729.) (32 sources).
There are other narratives which consider it conditional that a certain sign should be realized before the realization of the inevitable sign! Would not that condition makes the realization of the previous sign an inevitable sign too?
An example of that is the condition of the emergence of his eyes' predator in Sana'a before the appearance of AlSufiani:
In the book: Alghaybah of Alno’many, by his documentation from Obaid bin Zorarah, he mentioned the AlSufiani in the presence of AlSadiq (AS), and said: "How can that appear, yet his eyes' predator in Sana'a had not emerged?" (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, vol 3, p 478, h # 1044). (three sources).
But, is it acceptable that major signs which were mentioned very much in narratives, like that about AlKhorasani, Sho’aib bin Salih, the marvel star comet, torrential rain, natural disasters, wars which pervade the earth when two third of humanity will die, and the first good omen which guarantees the reappearance of AlMahdi (AJ) to be near (the death of the Caliph Abdullah), are all not inevitable, just because there are no narratives that describe them as inevitable !
Don’t we know that the narratives are incomplete and parts of them are lost, as is the case of the rest of the narratives?
What is the meaning of the phrase (And things he said to be inevitable) which is mentioned in one of the narratives above? Doesn’t that indicate that there are other inevitable signs?
Isn’t it meaningless that the Messenger (S) and the Imams (AS) inform us of signs which are non-inevitable unlikely to happen?
1. Are they uncertain of their knowledge about the occurrence of the sign? How could that be true when the Messenger (S) who does not speak out of whims, and the knowledge of the Imams of his Ahlulbayt (People of the Prophetic House) (AS) is his knowledge?
2. Are they uncertain of the appearance of the sign, and are worried about their credibility? Are they in need of announcing many prophecies, like what fortune tellers do in order to assert their credibility when some of the signs are realized?
The logical analysis is that the inevitable signs are not only five, as is obvious from the above mentioned narratives, despite the wide spread of this unproven idea; and not even only the ten signs mentioned in the narratives above.
It is also possible that the Imams of Ahlulbayt (People of the Prophetic House) (AS) are warning us that the likelihood of the occurrence of these non-inevitable signs depends on our actions and deeds; as we can take precautions to minimize their effects, or possibly even to prevent their occurrence. It is also possible that what could be non-inevitable are the details of the movement of a certain inevitable character, or the effects of the inevitable signs.
