Penitence and Piety (Taqwa) Are The Essence of Salvation




The Results:



  • The door for penitence - repentance will be closed when the sun rises from its setting side, at dawn time of 21st - 23rd of the month of Ramadhan; about three and a half months before the reappearance of the awaited existing Imam AlMahdi (AJ).

  • In order that Allah accepts penitence - repentance the following conditions should be met.

  • The reforms of our sins requires time, and if we wait until the first signs of the reappearance are realized, there will not be sufficient time to review our mistakes against those whom we made mistakes on them and did them injustice, by words and by deeds, and to pay back the rights to their proprietors.

  • There is no guarantee that we may not die at any moment, or we might be of the rescued third on the day the awaited AlQa'em Imam AlMahdi (AJ) reappears.

  • Accepting penitence - repentance in this life means winning in the hereafter life and on the day of judgment.



Accepting penitence - repentance will cease on the day the sun will rise from its setting side in the month of Ramadhan:



Abdul Rahman bin Awf and Abdullah bin Amr bin Alaass said that the Messenger of Allah (S) said: "… Penitence - Repentance will still be accepted until the sun rises from its setting side. When it rises every heart will be sealed at what it is in it; and people’s deeds will come to an end". (Narrated by Abo Alsheikh, and bin Mordawayh, in Altafseer Alkabeer.)


From Noah bin Abo Merriam, from Moqaatil bin Hayyan, from ‘Ikrimah, from Bin Abbass, from the Prophet (S), he said: "When the sun rises from its setting side mothers will be distracted from their children and the beloved from their hearts, every self will be busy with what befell it, after which no repentance will be accepted from anyone, except from the one who is improver in his faith, which will be accorded to him after that, as they were accorded to him before; while for the unbelievers it will be heartbreak and remorse". (Kitab Alfitan, by Na’eem bin Hamad Almoroozi, vol 9, Bab Toloo’ Alshams from Maghribiha.)


From Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (S) said: "In the morning when the sun rises from its setting side, monkeys and pigs become in this nation, records will be closed, pens will get dry, and no good deed will be increased, nor a bad deed will be decreased". (Narrated by Abo Alsheikh, and bin Mordawayh, in Altafseer Alkabeer.)


Alhafudh Abo Bakr ibn Mordawayh said in his interpretation: from Mohammad bin Ali bin Dohaym, from Ahmad bin Hazim bin Abo Ghorzah, from Dhirar bin Surad, from bin Fadheel, from Solaiman bin Yazid, from Abdullah bin Abo Awfaa, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, prayers and greetings on Him, say: "There shall come to the people a night which will be as long as those three nights of yours. When that will take place, it will be recognized by those who are worshipping voluntarily; one goes to read a part chapter then sleeps; then he wakes up, reads a part chapter then sleeps. While they are like that, people will shout at each other, saying: what is that? They will rush frightened to the mosques, and notice that the sun has risen. When it has reached the summit of the sky it goes back, then it rises from its rising side. By then belief will not avail a self". Then ibn Mordawayh asked, from Sofian Althawri, from Mansoor, from Rabée, from Hodhaifah, who said: I asked the Prophet, prayers and greeting on Him, what is the miracle of the sun rising from its setting side? He said: "That night will be elongated until it becomes a moon of two nights, and those who were praying will notice that, doing what they are used to do before; the stars will not move, standing still. They sleep and wake up to pray, then they sleep and wake up to pray, then they sleep and wake up. Night will be elongated and people get scared, there will be no morning. While they are waiting for the sun to rise from its rising side, it rises from its setting side. When people see that, they will become believers, and their belief does not avail them".




The correct way of penitence - repentance:


Allah, Exalted and High He is, accepts penitence - repentance from his servants for anything, except to have associates to Him. So, never do that, and never be hopeless of the mercy of Allah the High:


In the name of Allah, the All Merciful, the most Merciful:


"As for those who do bad deeds, then repented and believed, your Lord, thereafter, is indeed forgiving and merciful". (Quran, Ala’araaf 153).


"And verily, I am indeed forgiving of who repented, believed, and did righteous deeds, then remained in guidance". (Quran, Taha, 82).


"And He is who accepts repentance from His servants, and forgives bad deeds". (Quran, Alshoora, 25).


"And Allah does not forgive association with him, yet He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And the one who associates others with Allah has invented a great sin". (Quran, Alnisaa’, 48).


"And Allah does not forgive association with him, yet He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And the one who associates others with Allah has gone astray a distant aberrance". (Quran, Alnisaa’, 116).


"O you who believe, have fear of Allah. He will give you a criterion (to know right from wrong) and absolves your bad deeds, and forgives you and Allah is of the great favours". (Quran, Alanfaal, 29).


"So ask forgiveness of Him, then repent to Him; verily my Lord is near and responsive". (Quran, Hud: 61)


"And ask forgiveness of your Lord. Verily He is merciful and amiable". (Quran, Hud: 90).


"Then Allah accepts repentance after that for whom He wills; and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful". (Quran, Altawbah 27).




Guideline for an acceptable repentance, Allah willing:




Asking forgiveness + Repentance + Good deeds + Belief and piety + Guidance = Forgiveness



The means of winning the acceptance of Allah, Exalted and High, of repentance, and winning pardon and forgiveness: (Tafseer Al’amthal, vol 3, p 48. with some elaboration and additions).


  1. Earnestly and painfully asking forgiveness.

  2. Repentance to be coupled with the ability to commit the disobedience, and the determination not to repeat it in the future. That means not after loosing the ability to commit it; like embezzling public property after being fired from a job, or after retirement.

  3. Repentance to be coupled with true remorse about committing the disobedience.

  4. Repentance to be coupled with good deeds to make up for the effects of the disobedience, like returning stolen money to its proprietors , relieving them of any injustice even if that means a loss for you, or any other good action of compensation for them by this intention if you are unable. "Verily, good deeds do away with bad deeds" (Quran, Hud 114). The Messenger (S) said: "If you did a bad deed do a good deed with it, which will do away with it".

  5. Avoiding grievous disobediences by monitoring yourself and deterring it will warrant forgiveness of minor disobediences: "If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden to do, we shall atone your bad deeds, and allow you into a noble entrance" (Quran, Alnisaa’ 31). "Grievous sins are those that Allah the Exalted and Glorified necessitates hell" (Imams AlBaqer, AlSadiq, and AlRidha (AS)).

  6. Asking intersession from the righteous: "And avoid a day when no self can avail another self of anything, nor an intersession be accepted of it, nor a compensation be taken from it, nor will they be championed" (Quran, Al Baqarah 48).


Minor disobediences turn into grievous ones in case:


  1. Insisting on repeating them: From Imam AlSadiq (AS): "Not a minor disobedience with insistence".

  2. When those who commit it consider it minor, belittling it, and committing it as a minor disobedience which Allah, the forgiving the merciful, shall forgive. From Imam Ali (AS): "The worst of sins are those belittled by who does them".

  3. Committing it stubbornly and arrogantly and in disobedience to Allah.

  4.  When it is committed by someone who has a social status which makes others do alike. From the Messenger of Allah (S): "Who innovates a bad practice, he will bear its heavy burden and the heavy burden of those who do it, none of their burdens will be decreased.”

  5.  When the one who commits a sin is glad and proud of it. From the Messenger of Allah (S): "If someone commits a sin laughing, he will enter hell fire weeping".

  6.  If the one who commits a minor sin considers that when there is no immediate punishment from Allah for his disobedience is a sign of forgiveness, or that Allah is satisfied with him, and looks at himself as immune from torture for any reason, (like claiming that loving the Ahlulbayt (People of the Prophetic House) (AS) without following their way, which is the way of the Messenger of Allah, Allah’s prayers and greetings on him and on his progeny).
