Is It Forbidden To Define Timings For The Signs Of The Reappearance Of Imam AlMahdi (AJ)?

 

 

There are narratives which mention that the Imams of Ahlulbayt (People of the Prophetic House)(A refused to state about the timing of the day of reappearance, despite their abundant statements about Imam AlMahdi (AJ), about the properties of his era, and the signs of his reappearance. Not only that, but they also forbade any timing, and ordered us to accuse of telling lies any one who informs about the time of reappearance.

 

Yet, many books and articles are published now, the authors of which are timing the day of reappearance; even some clergymen are giving timings during their meetings on the internet and on the pulpits. Some of them declare that they were not actually giving a timing, but in fact they implicitly suggest a timing by stating that some of the present day persons are the ones referred to in the narratives; and they add the phrase: (Allah knows better). And there are other published books and articles in which the authors falsify timings and prohibit them, even mocking these attempts… Where is the truth?... Another perplexity!

 

There are only five narratives which refuse any timing; related by the same narrators. They are:

 

From Alfadhl bin Shadhan: Imam Abo Abdullah AlSadiq (AS) said: "O Mohammad: if any one informs you about timings, ascribing it to us, do not hesitate to accuse him of lying. We do not give a timing to anyone" / "Should anyone tells you something about timing, do not be afraid of accusing him of lying; as we do not state about timing to any one". "Liars are those who time. We never timed in the past, nor do we time for the future.) … (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, . vol 3, p 377, h # 927.) (nine sources).

 

From… Mohammad bin Ali, from Abdullah bin Jibilah, from Ali bin Abo Hamzah, from Abo Nasseer, from Abo Abdullah (Ja’far AlSadiq, AS): I asked him about AlMahdi (AJ), and he said: "Liras are the timers. We of the Ahlulbayt (People of the Prophetic House) do not time". "Allah is bent on being against the timing of the timers". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, . vol 3, p 377, h # 928) (nine sources).

 

 

From… Mohammad bin Ali, from Abdullah bin Jibilah, from Ali bin Abo Hamzah, from Abo Nasseer, Abo Abdullah (Ja’far AlSadiq, AS) said: "Mohammad (S) said: ‘Liars are the timers’. O Abo Mohammad, ahead of this matter will be five signs, the first of which is the call in the month of Ramadan; and the emergence of the AlSufiani, the emergence of the Khorasany, the killing of the immaculate soul, and the ground sinking in the desert". Then he said: "O Abo Mohammad, ahead of that there must come the two plagues: the white plague, and the black plague". I said: My self be sacrificed for you, what are they? He said: "the white plague is the sweeping death. The black plague is death by the sword. AlMahdi shall not reappear until his name is called from the depth of the sky, on the twenty third night (of the month of Ramadan), on the eve of Friday". I said: With what the call will be? He said: "In his name and his father’s name: O yes, so-and-so is AlMahdi of the family of Mohammad. Listen to him and obey him. Every thing in which Allah had put a soul shall hear that cry. It will awaken the sleeping who will go out to the yard of his house, virgins will leave their private rooms, and AlMahdi shall emerge at what he hears, which is the cry of Gabriel (AS). (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, vol 3, p 472, h # 1036.) (four sources, from one source in Alno’many).

 

I heard Abo Ja’far, Mohammad bin Ali Alridha (AS) say: "The Imam after me is my son Ali. His status is my status; his word is my word, and to obey him is to obey me. The Imam after him is AlHassan, his status is the status of his father; his word is the word of his father, and to obey him is to obey his father". Then he kept silent. I said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah, who will be the Imam after AlHassan? He went on weeping so much, and said: "After the son of AlHassan is his son, the awaited rightfully AlQa'em (Imam In-Charge)". I said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah, why was he named AlQa'em (Imam In-Charge)? He said: "Because he will rise after his name is forgone, and many of those who acknowledged his Imamate have become apostates". I said: And why was he called ‘the awaited’? He said: "Because the days of his absence will be too many, and their duration will be too long. The faithful will wait for his emergence, the doubtful will deny him, the deniers will mock his name, the timers will lie about it, those in a hurry during it will be losers, and the Muslims will survive in it". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, vol 4, p 186, h # 1244.) (fifteen sources).

 

In the book AlNihayah AlKobraa, p. 392 and in another place of this narrative, from Mohammad bin Nusayr, from bin Alfurat, from Mohammad bin Almofadhal, he said: I asked my master Abo Abdullah Ja’far bin Mohammad AlSadiq (AS): Is there a certain time for the hoped for and awaited AlMahdi (AS) known by the people? He said: "Allah forbid to set a time for him, or that our Shiites to set a time;" Then he said: "That shall be at the beginning of the sun rising white and pure. When it rises and becomes white, a caller will call to the creatures from the eye of the sun, in plain Arabic heard by all those on heavens and on earth: O creatures, this is the AlMahdi of Ahlulbayt (People of the Prophetic House). He will call him by the name of his grand father, the Messenger of Allah (S), naming him also by his agnomen, and relating him to his father AlHassan the eleventh. Follow him and you will be well guided, and do not disagree with him and you will go astray". (Hilyat Alabrar, p 658, Ghayat Almaram, p 706, from Alnihayah Alkobraa, p 392, and from Jaami’ Alathar, p 495, and in Albihaar, vol 53, pp 1-39.)

 

 

  1. Keep in mind that we have no time to go into jurisdictional and doctrinal discussions, into which we are basically unqualified to go. And may Allah have mercy on anyone who is aware of the status of himself.

  2. It is known that the concept of the reappearance of AlMahdi from Ahlulbayt (People of the Prophetic House)(AS) at the end of time, who will reinstate the caliphate to Ahlulbayt, and all corners of the earth will be under his reign, had been fought against and distorted along fourteen centuries by those who opposed the members of Ahlulbayt. On the other hand, his partisans and supporters had to resort to prudence. It is then not unlikely that each one of the two sides had resorted to distort and invent Prophetic statements that forbid timings, to serve their own purposes.

  3. There are many Prophetic statements which say that if people were to know the time of the reappearance of AlMahdi (AJ), which is to be many centuries after the era of the Messenger of Allah (S) and the Imams (AS), of which we are certain now, and not at a time close to that time, when they were informed about the prescribed timing. That will not be in the interest of the Muslim nation, and the believers will be likely to get hopeless of the inevitability of the promised day to come.

Imam Aljawad (AS) was asked: Why was he called the awaited, and in another version: AlQa'em (Imam In-Charge)? He said: "Because he shall have an absence of many days, and a lengthy duration. The faithful will wait his emergence, those in doubt will deny him, the deniers will mock his name, the timers will lie about it, those in a hurry will be the losers in it, and the Muslims will be the survivors". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, . vol 4, p 186, h # 1244.) (fifteen sources).

4.  People may not be able to understand so many of the scientific properties of many signs, and what causes them, except after man reaches his mental perfection, and after the scientific development at the time of reappearance, as we will see later on. Therefore, it is not possible to allow anybody (including us) to define the day of reappearance, especially by defining arbitrary and false signs and timings, in good intentions or otherwise, which will not be realized, are the easiest ways to shake the convictions about the matter of Imam AlMahdi (AJ). It could be for political benefits, as was done by the Abbasid Caliph Abdullah Almansoor to promote the case of his son Mohammad Abdullah AlMahdi, assuming that he was the awaited Mahdi, because of having the same name, as he claimed.

 

Which way did they interpret the following narrative:

 

From Imam Ja’far AlSadiq, from his father Imam Mohammad AlBaqir (AS), he said: "When AlQa'em (Imam In-Charge) will rise, he shall appoint in all regions of earth a man to each region, telling him: your covenant is on your palm. When you will be faced with what you do not understand, or know how to give a judgment about, look into your palm, and act according to what will be in it". (Alkitab Almobeen, & Alghaybah of Alno’many.)

 

Up to about twenty years ago, when mobile smart phones began to be in use, in which we can now save all the rules of Islamic codes of law and the verdicts accordingly, this story was considered either a matter of myths and legends of the ancients, of weak authentication, doubtful, or of the miracles of the awaited Imam AlMahdi (AJ). Surprisingly, the first PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) manufactured in 1996, was named Palm!.... Similar to that are the narratives about seeing his companions with whom he talks, wherever they might be on earth, any time he wishs; and the flight of his companions between clouds. Don’t we do that now in video conversations, and we fly by airplanes?

 

5.  It is clearly understood, from the few narratives about disliking or forbidding the timings, that what is meant is to state that one of the Imams of Ahlulbayt (People of the Prophetic House) (AS) had defined the time of the reappearance of the awaited Imam AlMahdi (AJ), and also the arbitrary timing of the day of reappearance, which is not based on the realization of the signs of reappearance; as it is clear in many of the narratives, some of which are the following:

 

Imam Abo Abdullah (Ja’far AlSadiq AS) said: "O Mohammad: if any one informs you about timing ascribed to us, do not hesitate to accuse him of lying. We do not give a timing to anyone" / "Should anyone tells you something about timing, do not be afraid of accusing him of lying; we do not define a timing to any one." / "Liars are those who time. We never timed in the past, nor do we time for the future.) (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, . vol 3, p 377, h # 927.) (nine sources).

 

From Abo Abdullah (Ja’far AlSadiq AS): I asked him about AlMahdi (AS), and he said: "The timers are lying. We, members of Ahlulbayt (People of the Prophetic House), do not define timing to anyone" / "Liars are the timers. We did not time in the past, nor do we time for the future". (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, . vol 3, p 377, h # 928.) (nine sources).

 

From AlHossain bin the leader of the believers Imam Ali (AS), addressing one of his companions, he said: Prophet Mohammad (S) said: " ‘The timers are lying…’ O Abo Mohammad, ahead of this matter there will be five signs, the first of them is the call in the month of Ramadan, then the emergence of the AlSufiani, the emergence of the AlKhurasani, killing the immaculate soul, and the sinking of the ground in the desert…" (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, . vol 3, p 472, h # 1036.) (four sources).

 

6.  It is a spiritual strife on the way towards the mental integration of man, to follow a scholarly and objective program to recognize the signs and define their properties, their sequence of occurrence, and how to be protected from their effects, in order to be prepared for the awaited day of reappearance, making use of the scientific developments of our time, and watching out for their realization by observing the political, celestial, and environmental events. I believe that a program like this, by means of investigating the signs of the reappearance, is the core of the worship regarding waiting for the relief. The Messenger of Allah (S) said: “The best form of worship is waiting for the relief.” And in another form: “The best strife of my nation is waiting for the relief.” (Mi’jam Ahadeeth Al’imam AlMahdi, . vol 1, p 170, h # 170.) (53 sources).

 

 

In summary:

 

  1. The narratives confirm that the Imams of Ahlulbayt (People of the Prophetic House) (AS) did not give any timing.

  2. The narratives confirm the prohibition of arbitrary timing which does not rely on the realization of the signs of reappearance.

  3. The narratives about prohibiting timings are few, no more than five, which were reported in many sources, from the same two narrators; and they do not justify the common absolute prohibition.

  4. The Messenger of Allah (S) and the Imams of Ahlulbayt (People of the Prophetic House) (AS) ordered us to wait for the relief, and to anticipate its signs. So what should we accurately anticipate, and what will happen first and when?

  5. From the leader of the believers, Imam Ali (AS): in Aljafr : “Know and keep it secret, and on the time announce the signs to the world. Instigate the knowledgeable and the men of the pen, and the one who kept the secret, mobilizing the people.”

 

The respectable Islamic thinker, martyr sayyid Mohammad Sadiq Alsadr (Allah have mercy on him) said: "Should the signs occur they would indicate the proximity of reappearance. This is a truthful matter, and does not include the prohibited timing at all. It is but a general timing, meaning that it remains between one day and many days, or even between one year and many years. If there will be ten years between the realization of the near sign and the reappearance of AlMahdi (AS) it will still be considered near, because ten year are but few, compared with that long time that preceded them. Therefore, that will not be a timing, nor is it to be considered a prohibiting narratives".

 

 

Therefore, it is very important to define the properties of the signs, and the sequence of their appearance, as accurately as possible, to block the way for the arbitrary timers, and those who claim Mahdawism, or claiming to be the appointed representatives and agents of the awaited AlMahdi (AJ), attempting to deceive us for their own worldly interests. Moreover, we are to anticipate the signs of the reappearance of the awaited Imam AlMahdi (AJ) by means of knowledge and awareness of what will happen, and get well prepared for the formidable year of the reappearance.

 

 

The results of the investigation on this site are not about timing, but for anticipating the realization of the signs in certain days and months, and defining what should we anticipate, as accurately as possible. It is similar to how do we anticipate the sighting of the crescent of Eed Alfitr (a sign of the beginning of the Eed and its sequence) on the twenty ninth day of Ramadan (the timing of the sign), as we know that we should see the crescent on the west side, immediately after sun set (the position and timing of the sign), and also know the shape of the crescent (the property of the sign).
